Apple has been staying on the “trash can” Mac Pro since 2013 with outdated hardware. They promised to release a more configurable and upgradable Mac Pro in 2017. Now in WWDC 2019, Apple finally introduces the long-waited “modular” Mac Pro for professional users.
The new Mac Pro has a completely new exterior design, which is built around a stainless-steel frame with an aluminum external enclosure. It has the unique lattice structure on both front and back, which Apple claims to optimize airflow and maintain structural rigidity. The stainless-steel frame act as both the case feet and handles. Like a normal PC tower, you get I/O ports on the top and back.
For performance, the Mac Pro can be equipped with an Intel Xeon processor with up to 28 cores and 56 threads. You can pair the system with up to 1.5 TB of six-channel DDR4 ECC RAM running at 2933 MHz, as well as two 2 TB SSDs (total 4 TB). The most basic Mac Pro will have an AMD Radeon Pro 580X GPU for graphics. Apple debuts a new Mac Pro Expansion Module, which includes up to two AMD Radeon Pro Vega II GPUs integrated with Thunderbolt 3. Each MPX Module can have 64 GB of HBM2 memory and provide 28.2 teraflops of compute power. Each Mac Pro can install two MPX modules.
The Mac Pro is designed to be easily upgradable. It has a double-sided motherboard, with 12 user-accessible DIMM slots and 8 PCI Express expansion slots. Three fans at the front and a blower fan on the side are responsible for moving hot air away from the case. The internal power supply can provide a maximum of 1400 watts.
Apple also introduces the Pro Display XDR and a dedicated ASIC card for video editing, called Afterburner. The base model Mac Pro will cost $5999 USD (MSRP), and start shipping later this fall.
