After months of rumors, Google finally announced the release of their new budget-oriented Pixel devices at the Google I/O 2019. Two models will be available with two screen sizes, which are called Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL. They are priced at $399 USD and $479 USD (MSRP) respectively.
The new Pixel 3a has similar exterior design with a two-tone back as the Pixel family. Instead of glass and aluminum, the Pixel 3a is made out of polycarbonate/plastic for cheaper manufacturing costs. You can choose from three colors, including Just Black, Clearly White, and Purple-ish.
The Pixel 3a can have either a 5.6-inch 18.5:9 or 6.0-inch 18:9 OLED display, with a resolution of 2220×1080 or 2160×1080. Both models are equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 SoC instead of a Snapdragon 845, along with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. The lower power chipset should work with Google’s stock “Pixel” software without much problems.
The 12.2 mega-pixel dual-pixel main camera is the same as the more expensive Pixel 3, with support for optical image stabilization (OIS), HDR+ and Portrait mode. Night Sight is available for extremely low light environment. Other features like stereo speakers, Bluetooth 5.0, Active Edge and fingerprint sensor are also on-board. And yes, it has a 3.5 mm headphone jack as well.
The standard Pixel 3a gets a 3000 mah battery, while the XL version gets a 3700 mAh. Both batteries support 18 watt fast-charging through USB-PD, and can be topped up for 7 hours of usage in 15 minutes. Google claims the battery can power the devices for up to 30 hours on a single charge.
Google promises the Pixel 3a will receive at least 3 years of software and security updates. The Pixel 3a is priced at $399 USD and Pixel 3a XL is at 479 USD (MSRP), which are both available now in selected countries.
