EdgeRouter X is the entry level gigabit router from the Ubiquiti’s lineup. It runs on EdgeOS, which is used to both manage and monitor your network traffic.

The EdgeRouter X is packed inside a white hard cardboard box. At the front, you can see a photo of the router and its five RJ-45 Ethernet ports, as well as the model name and Ubiquiti’s Logo. Flipping the box to the back, there are a list of what’s included and another list for some of the router’s features.

The outer casing of the EdgeRouter X is made of metal, possibly steel. There are the Ubiquiti’s logo and EdgeRouter X’s name painted on top. Also, a total of six green LED lights, which will be used to indicate the status of power and network activity for each Ethernet port.

Four rubber feet are installed on the bottom to prevent the router from slipping. Or you can mount it on the wall directly.

There are total of five RJ-45 Ethernet ports at the front, which are all capable of full Gigabit (1 Gbps) speed. You can power the router either through the traditional 12V DC input or the eth0 port for PoE (Power over Ethernet) input. Please be reminded that you will need a Ubiquiti’s proprietary 24V passive PoE adapter. If you have a powerful enough adapter, you can power an additional Unifi Access Point through the eth4 port’s PoE output (Only those support passive PoE).

At the back, a hard reset button and the 12V power input can be found.

There is an array of drilled holes for ventilation purpose. Remember to keep some distance between the sides and the wall, or else you may overheat the router.

Conclusion

Overall, the EdgeRouter X is a great addition to a home network, which you can get some advanced monitoring and management features. For example, you can set custom Quality of Service (QoS) for your usage, which will give priority to more important traffic (such as online games or video streaming). Also, you can set up custom firewall rules and VPN routing as you wish.

However, for novice users, the EdgeRouter X’s EdgeOS may be feature-rich and powerful, but the software may be less intuitive and require more research/knowledge. Fortunately, Ubiquiti’s detailed users manuals and forums online should help you get started.
