Online cloud storage has become increasingly popular among people, for storing and sharing photos and documents. Google Drive is one of the most used cloud storage services. With its existing desktop application, you can directly upload files to Google Drive from the computers’ local storage, no need to use the web browsers. However, the current Google Drive desktop app will be replaced in March 2018.

According to Google, no support will be provided to the Google Drive desktop app on 11 December 2017, and it will be closed on 12 March 2018. Please note that any other Google Drive related services are still available for use, including the mobile applications. Don’t worry. In fact, Google is just replacing the original app with a “new” app (Backup and Sync).

Back in July 2017, Google introduced the new desktop app, called Backup and Sync. It will be combining both Google Drive and Google Photo. You can access and upload files like the original one, but with added Google Photo service. You can have unlimited photo storage for free as usual, if you choose to upload in high quality setting (slightly compressed), instead of original quality. Also, it will automatically sync your specified folders to Google Drive, that can use through other devices.
Google will start notifying users of the desktop app in October 2017. Enterprise users will switch over to the other app, Drive File Stream, with better teams and organizations support. Google will only allow you to install one app, “Backup and Sync” or “Drive File Stream”. You can find a detailed comparison between the two apps from Google.
