According to Seagate, the amount of data created around the world will increase from 33 Zettabytes (ZB) in 2018 to about 175 ZB by 2025. Larger and more efficient storage is required. Now, Seagate introduces new 16 TB hard drives into its Exos X, IronWolf and IronWolf Pro lineups.
The Exos X16 HDD is designed for Enterprises, which can offer up to 33% more petabytes (PB) for storage per rack, compared to 12 TB HDDs. The drive is sealed with helium to reduce power consumption. It has a rated MTBF of 2,500,000 hours and a 5-year warranty. It spins at 7200 RPM and can achieve sequential read/write speeds at 261 MB/s.
The IronWolf and IronWolf Pro 16 TB HDDs are perfect for Network-Attached Storage (NAS). They both spins at 7200 RPM with 256 MB of cache. They have rotational vibration (RV) sensors installed to protect the drives from operation vibration in a multi-bay NAS environment. The standard IronWolf has a rated MTBF of 1,000,000 hours and a 3-year warranty, while the IronWolf Pro has a longer MTBF of 1,200,000 hours and a 5-year warranty. The IronWolf and IronWolf Pro can transfer data at 210 MB/s and 250 MB/s respectively.
The Exos X16 HDD is priced at $629 USD (MSRP), with the IronWolf at $610 USD (MSRP) and IronWolf Pro at $665 USD (MSRP). They are available for purchase, starting from June 2019.
