Although Apple’s iOS operating system has been praised for its better overall software stability, it is inevitable for users to encounter some situations that hard reset is needed. In recent versions of iOS, relatively more bugs are not fixed before official release, causing the phone to behave abnormally. However, Apple has changed the method to hard reset/force restart for the new iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and possibly the iPhone X.

Due to the removal of the physical home button, you will need to press and hold both the power/side button and the volume down button at the same time for about 10 seconds, or until the Apple logo shows up on the screen for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The phone will restart after that.
Instead of the volume down button, you will need to press and hold the power/side/top button and the home button for about 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears for iPhone 6s or earlier devices.
Now, for the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, the hard reset process is made a little bit complicated. The original button combination (side button+volume button) is used to activate iOS 11’s Emergency SOS feature on the iPhone. To hard reset the phone, you will have to first press and release the volume up button, then press and release the volume down button, finally press and hold the side/power button until you see the Apple logo.
